"Our hope and expectation is for an agreement sooner rather than later," Pakistani Foreign Ministry spokesperson Tahir Andrabi told NPR.

President Trump says that he is pausing the U.S. effort to guide stranded vessels out of the Strait of Hormuz to finalize an Iran deal, but that the American forces' blockade of the Iranian ports would remain in place.

The U.S. military said it fired on Iranian forces and sank six small boats as it moved to reopen the Strait of Hormuz on Monday. The United Arab Emirates said it had come under attack from Iran.

Iran has presented a 14-point response to the U.S. proposal to end the war, according to Iranian state media.
