Connie Leyva, Executive Director of KVCR Public Media and former State Senator, has been named Woman of the Year for California’s 29th State Senate District by State Senator Eloise Gómez Reyes.In accepting the honor, Leyva shared, “I am deeply honored to be named Woman of the Year for Senate District 29 and to join my former colleague in this recognition. I look forward to continuing to engage with communities across KVCR’s broadcast region so our work fully reflects the diverse voices, people, and issues that define our region.”Leyva, who served in the California State Senate from 2014 to 2022, was a strong advocate for education, championing initiatives in kindergarten access, childcare, and financial aid reform. Ontario, Calif. — The Empire Strykers of the Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) today announced a new broadcast partnership with KVCR Public Media that will bring the highest level of professional indoor soccer in the world to viewers across the Inland Empire. The partnership, which will see five 2025-26 Strykers home games streamed on KVCR — the region’s PBS television station (channel 24) — launches tonight with one of the league’s most anticipated matchups, as Empire hosts two-time champion San Diego Sockers in a Southern California rivalry clash. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. PST.Additional broadcasts are set for February 5 (vs. Utica), February 19 (vs. Baltimore), March 5 (vs. San Diego) and March 12 (vs. Tacoma).The strategic collaboration reflects a shared commitment to serving the Inland Empire through accessible programming, local storytelling and community connection. San Bernardino, March 6, 2025 –KVCR PUBLIC MEDIA announced today that it is now live streaming on Prime Video.PBS and Amazon announced that more than 150 local PBS stations, including KVCR, and the PBS KIDS Channel will launch ad-free as a Prime Video FAST offering. This marks the first time this programming will be available for free on a major streaming service, free to customers across the country. Additionally, PBS Distribution (PBSd), a leading distributor of public media content around the world, will offer two new FAST channels - PBS Drama and PBS Documentaries. KVCR Public Media is excited to announce that it received a $86,000 grant from the Creative Corps Inland SoCal, a collaboration between the California Arts Council, the Inland Empire Community Foundation, Arts Connection, Riverside Arts Council, and the California Desert Arts Council. KVCR Public Media was selected to participate in this grant to hire local artists to work on projects that highlights public health awareness and pandemic recovery, public awareness related to water and energy conservation, climate mitigation, emergency preparedness, relief, and recovery; awareness of civic engagement, election participation; and community engagement and awareness around social justice. KVCR Public Media will work with Juan Delgado from the Garcia Center for the Arts, renowned Native American artist Gerald Clark, and artists from the Idyllwild Arts Native Arts Center to promote Native American art and cultures. KVCR will showcase the artist’s work for a special reception and auction at KVCR Studios on Thursday, May 23rd at 5:30pm. We are also working with a local film-maker, Sofia Figueroa, to film a 4-part docuseries of warehousing in the Inland Empire. She will explore the “good, bad and ugly” of warehouses in the region. This series will interview local businesses, families, and organizations and “dig in” of how warehouses have affected them in their day to day lives. High School Students Produce Short Documentaries for KVCR-TV

San Bernardino – KVCR Public Media works to engage with and support our local community’s endeavors. KVCR-TV the local PBS station serving the Inland Empire is spearheading a youth media project, “Teen Weeks of Film” providing an opportunity for high school students from our region to share their voices on a variety of topics. Ten high school students selected from Summit, Upland, Chaffey and San Bernardino Middle College have worked under the guidance of KVCR staff member Briana Navarro. Students were given the direction to produce a short documentary on various topics and lend their voice to create awareness on social issues that affect our youth today. Topics include mental health, exploring Mariachi, the influence coaches have on students, conflicts in the middle east, the influence social media has and life of photographers. “This has been such a rewarding project. Being able to share with the students the experiences and challenges I faced while attending the IMA film program at San Bernardino Valley College and now passing on what I learned had been great. And seeing the positive impact it’s had on the students has been a wonderful experience for me” said Navarro. Navarro meets with the students weekly and shares some of the fundamentals needed to produce a story, including storyboarding, understanding what story they want to tell, how to present and shape it, and learning camera functions, lighting and editing skills. Leonard Sanchez, English teacher at Chaffey High School and the MEChA Club advisor, shared the opportunity this project has presented to his students. “Every Wednesday I drive the students to the program and its great to hear them talk about their project and listen to them collaborate. And even though school is out their enthusiasm has not waned. It’s a testament to their dedication.” “It’s always great when we have the chance to work with our youth and have them learn about our industry and get them excited to share their thoughts and develop a voice for issues that are important to them,” said KVCR Executive Director, Connie Leyva. At the end of the 10-week program, and the completion of the student’s video project each student will receive a $1,000 stipend. The short documentaries vary from 5 to 10 minutes in length and will be showcased at screening held in the KVCR-TV studio on Thursday, June 27 at 5:30pm. KVCR is located on the campus of San Bernardino Valley College. Parents, teacher, staff and the public are invited to attend. Refreshments will be provided. KVCR Public Media is excited to announce that it received a $25,000 grant from The CA Endowment to have 10 local high school students produce short film documentaries. KVCR, the PBS affiliated public TV station serving the Inland Empire, was selected to participate in identifying 10 local high school students to work with KVCR staff to produce short film documentaries in areas of social justice, education or social issues that students face on a regular basis. Students will work closely with KVCR professional staff to develop their short films at the station.Students will learn about the basics of camera and lighting, creating a story proposal and story boards, filming, editing and post-production techniques. Students will further learn about the Film, Television & Media program (FTVM) at San Bernardino Valley College during the 10-week program. Upon learning the basics in these areas, students will display their knowledge by creating a short film documentary. Briana Navarro from KVCR (Alumni Valley College ‘23) will work with the students on their 10-week program and documentary project. KVCR Public Media in partnership with San Bernardino Community College District hosted its inaugural “Operation Gobble” on Saturday, November 18, 2023 from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at the KVCR station. Five hundred local families were selected to receive a Thanksgiving meal bag during “Operation Gobble”. Sponsors included the San Bernardino Community College District, Community Action Partnership of San Bernardino County (CAP), Inland Empire Health Plan (IEHP), PENSKE and Five Heights Realty.Five hundred families from our local schools, community colleges, faith-based and community organizations, foster youth, veterans and seniors were pre-selected to receive a meal bag which contained a turkey, ham or chicken and the fixings for a delicious Thanksgiving dinner. New Locally Produced Childrens Series Premieres Friday, October 6th on KVCR-TV

What better place to host a children’s show than on PBS. KVCR PBS is proud to present our first locally produced children’s series, Learn With Me.KVCR has partnered with the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools and Footsteps 2 Brilliance (F2B). Together we’ve created the children’s television series, Learn With Me. It’s hosted by educational professionals and teachers from throughout our region. Learn With Me is designed for children to explore and spark learning along the way.Each half-hour episode is a combination of live action and animation - the first half of the show is recorded in English and the second half is recorded in Spanish. In each episode we invite viewers to explore a variety of topics including Science, Technology, and Language Arts. For example, in one episode we visit Noun Town to learn what a noun is. The live action with the teachers is recorded in the KVCR studio in front of a green screen. We're excited to work with teachers and bring new children's content to the community. This series will be educational, entertaining, and engaging.KVCR Executive Director Connie Leyva stated, “Learn With Me is an engaging and fun show that is the first of its kind in the Nation, highlighting both English and Spanish languages and using teachers from San Bernardino County. I love it and I think you will too!”In partnership with the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools, together we’ll launch this children’s series. Many episodes incorporate the F2B books as the storyline for some episodes. F2B is a literacy program contracted by the county schools offered free to children who reside in the San Bernardino County. Local and regional children’s authors’ work is also featured.The target audience is children 1st through 3rd grade. Learn With Me is hosted by educational professionals, many who are teachers from throughout the county.San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools, Ted Alejandre stated, “The feedback I’ve gotten has been tremendous, teachers are excited to participate. They want to be on this TV broadcast so that their students can see them on TV. Showing students their love for language, their love for literacy and their love to teach.”In 2021, KVCR was asked to produce a learning show for children. KVCR received a grant in 2022 from San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools to produce the series, for three seasons with 12 episodes per season.Our animated characters include Eddie, a spirited boy who loves to have fun and learn new things. He attends Central Elementary School, along with Barry the Bell the wise-cracking and quick-thinking baritone who guides students to where they need to be, and Barbara the Substitute Bell who works when Barry is out. Together with the teachers, Barry, Eddie and Barbara make for a fun and charming cast and make learning fun!Learn With Me held its premiere screening on Thursday, September 21st at the Lewis Family Playhouse in Rancho Cucamonga with our production crew, teachers, administrators, and families were in attendance.KVCR will offer outreach activities in the coming year to engage our children with Learn With Me, including our KVCR PBS Kids Camp next Spring. 91.9 KVCR Works to Grow News Team

KVCR 91.9 FM is excited to announce that it is growing (expanding) their newsroom by adding new personnel to the station. KVCR, the NPR affiliated public radio station serving the Inland Empire was selected to participate in the inaugural cohort for the 2023-2025 California Local News Fellowship program spearheaded by UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism thanks to a $25 million state appropriation.This fund will allow us to build our newsroom. Anthony Victoria joins us from the California Local News Fellowship program with a two-year commitment. Anthony was a former reporter for Inland Empire Community News, a freelance journalist and the founder of the independent news outlet, The Frontline Observer. He is a graduate of University of California, Riverside in History and San Bernardino Valley College.“At a time when the journalism industry is facing a variety of existential threats, from polarization and lack of trust in news to profound business model failures, our aim is to be a bright spot, filling critical gaps in reporting and creating a viable career path for the next generation of journalists,” Christa Scharfenberg, Project Director of the Fellowship program stated.Anthony joins Madison Aument who has been reporting for KVCR for over a year and has frequently been featured on the Statewide news program, The California Report. Madison was a reporter for Redlands Community News and a graduate of University of Redlands in English Literature.Also, new to the team is Toni Lopez, joining us from Cal Poly Pomona first as an intern and soon to be a contributor working in our newsroom. She has filed several reports on various topics including local park funding in San Bernardino, the Kaiser medical waste issue, and the vector control mosquito borne illnesses issue.Connie Leyva, Executive Director of KVCR stated, “We are so excited to have a fully functioning newsroom that will cover the happenings of the Inland Empire and provide accurate and factual information to the community.”KVCR continues to be a news source for our local community. FNX & ICT Provide Live Midterm Election CoverageSan Bernardino, CA | Two major Indigenous media outlets, ICT and FNX - First Nations Experience, are partnering to bring a three-hour live newscast from an Indigenous perspective of the 2022 midterm elections on Tuesday, November 8, 2022. The newscast will feature interviews with Indigenous candidates running for public office, updates from ICT correspondents, lively conversation with political pundits and watch parties. The newscast will be broadcast from San Bernardino, California. Coverage will start at 7 p.m. PST and conclude at 10 p.m. PST on election night. This special newscast will be co-anchored by Aliyah Chavez, anchor and managing editor of the ICT Newscast, and Mark Trahant, ICT editor-at-large. It is executive produced by Jennifer Canfield. The organizations have partnered together to bring live election coverage since 2018. The 2022 midterms are set to have wide repercussions for Indigenous nations and people. On a federal level, all six voting Indigenous members of the U.S. Congress are running to be reelected, running for a new seat or finishing their term. There are a few other Indigenous candidates who could be elected to the U.S. Congress for the first time. The 2022 midterm elections also include the possibility of having the first Native candidate serve in the U.S. Senate since 2005. On a state level, ICT is tracking more than 100 candidates running for elected office. Those candidates are running in states from coast-to-coast including North Carolina and California to Hawai’i. This election night show will include correspondents reporting live from watch parties and campaign headquarters. The correspondents will be based across 11 states and Washington, DC.
