FNX ON THE RED CARPET
For the preview of “Flowers of the Killer Moon”. Because of the strike (which has since been settled), many of the actors were not present at this event. However, many of the behind-thescenes crew were interviewed – predominantly from the Osaga Nation. Indian Country Today’s Paris Wise conducted the interviews, and our own Daniel Adame was the videographer and editor.
INLAND EDITION SEASON I WRAPS UP!
We are very excited that our host Joe Richardson interviewed elected officials at all levels of government, helping to make sure that Inland Empire residents are aware of the important jobs that their elected officials do and how it affects their daily lives. Stay tuned for Season II which will begin filming in January. We will be exploring the world of non-profits in the Inland Empire.

KVC-ARt’s Host David Fleming Hosts 500th Show!
We couldn’t be prouder of David Fleming and the talent he has brought here to KVCR! In honor of this amazing accomplishment, KVCR hosted an “Evening with David Fleming” where Lillian Vasquez did a live interview with David and we got to know the man behind the microphone. Numerous previous guests were on hand to congratulate David!

Cielo Fund Honors Grant Awardees
KVCR was among a distinguished group of recipients that received a grant from the Cielo Fund. KVCR used this money to create the very popular radio show IE Latino Voices hosted by Yvette Walker. Cielo Fund is re-upping the grant so this show will continue! We also hope to make it into a 30- minute television show in the near future.

24TH SEASON AT THE REDLANDS BOWL The Redlands Bowl will celebrate 100 years under the stars with their Summer Music Festival and the KVCR production crew will be on hand to record the performances. This will mark KVCR’s 24th season. All performances will air on KVCR TV in October.

RIVERSIDE OFFICE OF EDUCATION SUMMIT KVCR’s own Director of Operations Tony Papa attended this event and presented on the new children’s show, Learn with Me! This educational television gem for Pre-K through third grade students is being created in conjunction with San Bernardino County Schools Superintendent Ted Alejandre and Footsteps2Brilliance. It will be in both English and Spanish. Papa talked about what is involved with producing a series like this including character development, working with classroom teachers, and the animation that helps bring the show to life.

KVCR STAFF ATTENDS ANNUAL PBS CONFERENCE
For the first time in several years, the annual PBS Conference was held in person. The event offered insight into current happenings in the Public Media world. New shows were previewed and ways to increase membership was a hot topic. All who attended came away energized and with great ideas!

TEAM KVCR ATTENDS STEM EVENT in Riverside which was led by an enthusiastic team of engineers who are lighting a flame for math and science among young IE students. Children and KVCR staff built a bridge from sand then demonstrated the bridge’s ability to hold weight. Thanks to Manny Saucedo for judging and to Ben Holland for his excellent bridge!
BOTH MAYOR TRAN OF SAN BERNARDINO AND MAYOR LOCK-DAWSON OF RIVERSIDE toured KVCR studios and both were impressed by what they saw, especially the “Green Screen.” Both Mayors are also a part of our newly created Community Advisory Board.
KVCR TEAM MEMBER LILLIAN VASQUEZ spoke on a panel at SBVC with the Institute of Media Arts. In attendance were teachers, students, and school district administrators. Lillian was also a guest speaker for Mass Communication students at Cal State San Bernardino. The topic was an excellent one – The Inland Empire is a media desert…how do we fix that?

KVCR ATTENDS PERFORMING ARTS SHOWCASE presented by the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools and The California Arts Project, and our own Director of Development Manny Saucedo was one of the presenters. Everyone in attendance thoroughly enjoyed the student performances!
IN COLLABORATION WITH SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY SCHOOLS, KVCR now hosts several podcasts put on by the County schools. This is in line with KVCR’s plan to be a media aggregator in the Inland Empire. KVCR IS PARTNERING WITH DELTA THETA SORORITY to bring awareness to the horrendous crime of sex trafficking right here in San Bernardino City and County. KVCR will produce a 2-3 minute video that can be used at events with a call to action to help end sex trafficking
KVCR HOSTS MINA KIM IN STUDIO
Ms. Kim is a dedicated California daily talk show host with Forum. Prior to joining Forum, Ms. Kim was KQED’s evening news anchor. Loved by all, some of KVCR’s longtime members enjoyed an informative and fascinating evening.
KVCR CONTINUES TO ADVANCE FNX by attending events to further exposure of the channel and learn more about native and indigenous cultures. Team members attended an Indian Gaming Association event as well as the annual Reservation Economic Summit, or RES 2023, with 4,000 attendees. FNX is currently broadcast in 29 states and events like these will help us ultimately get to all 50!
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR CONNIE LEYVA participated in Rialto’s 3rd Annual Youth Climate Action Summit at Eisenhower High School. Taking part on a panel with Supervisor Joe Baca, Jr., they discussed the impacts of pollution on this region and ways that students can get involved

KVCR continues to build community relationships
meeting with the Delta SigmaTheta Sorority to discuss filming possibilities. The KVCR team also met with The Frontline Observer’s Anthony Victoria to find ways to coordinate and collaborate with the community and The Weingart Foundation, which partners with communities across Southern California to advance racial, social and economic justice for all. It was a packed house with an excellent panel of local leaders discussing education and workforce for the future.
Inland Empire Labor Council visits and tours KVCR on March 20. More than 15 unions were in attendance representing thousands of workers in the Inland Empire. We look forward to a productive relationship with all unions represented.

KVCR Welcomes San Manuel
On February 2nd Chairwoman Lynn Valbuena and associates met with Chancellor Diana Rodriguez, Executive Vice Chancellor Jose Torres, and Executive Director Connie Leyva to discuss future FNX projects. The meeting and discussion were well received by all participants.
Chino Valley Chamber of Commerce Visits KVCR On February 6th Chino Chamber President Zeb Wellborn and 20 chamber members visited KVCR. Members were excited to learn about their local PBS and NPR station. Members also recorded “shout outs” on both radio and television to be used in the future here at KVCR.
Redlands Rotary Club Learns About the SBVC Culinary Program and Visits KVCR
Trustee Gonzalez and members of the Rotary Club enjoyed a delicious meal prepared by our own SBVC students, learned about the culinary arts program, and then headed over to KVCR for a tour! They too participated in “shout outs” on both radio and television. The tour was well received by all participants.

KVCR Receives Funding for Exciting Programs
Inland futures Foundation has been selected to receive $10,792 from the City of San Bernardino Arts and Historical Preservation Commission. These monies will be used to continue bringing valuable content to KVCR in the Visual, Performing Arts and Literary Arts.
KVCR received a $10,000 grant from the California Endowment.
The grant is being used to improve community health equity through journalism. This will specifically aid in increasing awareness of health and racial disparities, and improve coverage of underserved communities trying to cope in the Inland Empire. KVCR looks forward to using these funds in serving our community and increasing community engagement.

FNX Launches Broadcast in two new states as of the first of the year.
FNX will be seen in southeastern Virginia on WHRO and in eastern Kansas on KTWU. This brings FNX to a total of 30 affiliates broadcasting in 28 states with roughly a reach of 74 million homes.
KVCR rents out Radio Studios to a Los Angeles-based film production company.
The Whisper Network, a feature film coming in 2023, rented KVCR Radio production facilities for a full day of filming in December. This opportunity generated revenue for both Valley College and KVCR.

KVCR CONTINUES TO INSPIRE FUTURE LEADERS
Chaffey Community College students visited and toured KVCR. We had both television and radio activities for the students. It was great to see them both in front and behind the camera, as well as announcing on the radio! We were also joined by some of their journalism students and senior editors who learned from our reporters.

KVCR-TV is Now Live on “Local Now” We at KVCR are continually in search of means by which to get out to our community members the news and programing that they trust and value. Local Now is a big step in that direction and will provide everyone’s favorite PBS shows as well as access to locally created content, like Inland Edition and Learn With Me! Right in our studio we are hosting an exclusive look at Season 4 of Native Shorts, the screening of Native America 2.0, and giving a special thank you to our founding partner San Manuel Band of Mission Indians. Following the watch party will be a panel with the cast and crew!

Briana Navarro has graduated from the Institute of Media Arts and has been hired with KVCR as a Production Assistant on Inland Edition. Briana has proved invaluable not only on shoot days but also in the editing studio!

WE LOVE OUR STUDENT INTERNS!
Former Middle College High School/SBVC student Antonia “Toni” Lopez has joined the 91.9 KVCR News team for a summer internship. The 2020 MCHS Salutatorian was awarded her high school diploma and Associate of Arts degree in the same month! Toni is already providing her voice in local news stories and we’re proud to say that she will also be working as an intern at KVCR this Fall while attending Cal Poly Pomona.

KVCR CURATES RHYTHM LOUNGE IN CONJUNCTION WITH SBVC’s FILM, TV & MEDIA/INSTITUTE OF MEDIA ARTS
This show has been in the works for some time waiting for approval from PBS to upload into the PBS App. Once PBS granted the long-awaited greenlight, KVCR team members jumped into action to make sure everything was ready to launch this show with IMA students. KVCR WAS ON HAND TO COVER GROUNDBREAKING AT CRAFTON HILLS Crafton Hills College broke ground on the new Finkelstein Performing Arts Center. The groundbreaking ceremony was well attended and enjoyed by many members of SBCCD and the community.

STUDENTS AND PARENTS FROM RAMONAALESSANDRO Elementary toured the station. We’re not sure who enjoyed the event more – the parents or the students! It’s never too early to get our youngest learners engaged.
KVCR TV AND RADIO PRODUCE SPOTS FOR SUMMER CLASSES at both Valley College and Crafton Hills College. This is an amazing opportunity for students young and old to receive free tuition and books! KVCR will run these spots until July 2, 2023.
STUDENT INTERN PROGRAM funding is being sought from our viewers. Any funds raised are being matched by our corporate sponsor, Kitchell Construction. Radio listeners are being offered tickets to ComicCon Revolution and their donations will also be matched by Kitchell.

Learn with Me films all week during Spring Break. KVCR’s project with the San Bernardino County Schools had teachers in the studio all week to continue working on episodes for this new collaboration for our youngest learners.
KVCR attends Wolverine Con at Valley College. This high-powered event was orchestrated by the students enrolled in SBVC’s Film, Television, and Media program. Our own intern, Mariana Lapizco, had her multi-lingual film Blood Ties featured in the event and won both the Grand Jury Award and Director awards! Way to go Mariana

KVCR continues to support student Interns The Spring semester has started, and we are excited to have four new Interns joining us here at KVCR! Monday thru Friday. Students and staff are interacting every day and learning from each other. Our interns bring a great energy to the station.
Spotlight on Students
SBVC Music Major, Totionna Jennings is joining the KVCR team through the Federal Work Study program. Our intention is to have her work with Rick Dulock on our monthly show “Musically Speaking”. Musically Speaking is produced by Rick and hosted by SBVC Associate Professor, Margaret Worsley. KVCR Intern Mariana Pineda is in the process of writing and recording some cross promotion content for us. She is producing spots about KVCR TV shows which will air on KVCR Radio.
Rim of the World High School visits KVCR Representatives from San Bernardino County schools joined these high school students who learned about possible careers in the media and how attending SBVC can lead to those careers!

KVCR Supporting Crafton Hills College with Student Enrollment

OPERATION GOBBLE AT KVCR
Five-hundred families in our community received either a turkey, a chicken, or a ham in addition to a meal bag. The first 300 families also received a meal box from Community Action Partnership. We are happy to report that 150 of the families were students from San Bernardino Valley College and Crafton Hills College. A big thank you to our new Community Engagement Manager, Vanessa Wiarco and to SBCCD for their support. Be on the lookout for Operation Elf scheduled for mid-December.

KVCR’s Community Advisory Board continues to meet and find ways to make KVCR better. Members of the Board have been so inspired that they have asked that we meet monthly instead of bi-monthly! Thanks to Board Member Joerg Novak, KVCR will again host a radio segment on the local economy hosted by Professor of Economics at Claremont McKenna College, Dr. Manfred Keil to begin in January 2024.

San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools Hosted a Convening at SBVC
The California Community Schools Partnership Program (CCSPP) Southern Inland Regional Technical Assistance Center (SIR-TAC) Partnership Convening is designed to engage CCSPP grant recipients and partners in opportunities to network, elevate local and regional priorities, and optimize impactful strategies and resources targeted to the transformational goals and outcomes of community schools across Inyo, Mono, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties. After the event 20 participants came over to KVCR for a tour of the station. They were greeted by Eddie from Learn With Me!

KVCR IS THRILLED TO ANNOUNCE THE PREMIER OF LEARN WITH ME September 21st at 6 p.m. at the Lewis Playhouse in Rancho Cucamonga. This year-long project, undertaken in conjunction with Superintendent Ted Alejandro and the San Bernardino County Schools, will be the first of its kind on PBS across the country, airing in English and Spanish with the first 15 minutes in English and the second 15 minutes in Spanish. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone involved, with special appreciation for our dedicated teachers who also take on the roles of actors!

KVCR BEGINS FILMING INLAND EDITION
This newly remade show will feature elected officials from all levels of government, local, statewide, and constitutional. The goal is to get viewers more civically engaged and help them learn more about what exactly it is that their public servants do. This show will begin airing Friday nights on August 11th at 6 p.m. Join us for engaging and informative conversations.

COMMUNITY ADVISORY BOARD (CAB) ESTABLISHED AT KVCR
The first meeting of the KVCR CAB kicked off with all members attending to share their views and ideas. Originally scheduled to meet bi-monthly, the Board decided this group should meet monthly instead! KVCR looks forward to working with these valuable community leaders.

KVCR AWARDED LOCAL MEDIA FELLOWSHIP GRANT UC Berkley will be funding one paid full-time reporter to KVCR. This reporter will be covering news stories in the Inland Empire and will start in September of this year. We are extremely excited for this opportunity

KVCR is thrilled to be launching IE Latino Voices which will begin airing on the radio in March. We have hired Yvette Walker who currently hosts a show on KMET. We are thrilled that she will be able to host Latino Voices for us. Stay tuned!

KVCR Hires New Director of Corporate and Strategic Relations.
We are excited to welcome Manuel Saucedo to Team KVCR! Prior to joining KVCR, Manny worked for 8 years as the District Director for then Senator Connie Leyva where he helped her to bring millions of dollars to the communities they served, and engage the community in all aspects of their work.

FNX receives a grant from the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians to create programming. FNX Productions will receive $52,800 in 2023 to do another season of Native Shorts in conjunction with the Sundance Institute's Native American and Indigenous Program. This grant also covers additional segments of FNX Now, a news program focusing on important Native American issues across the US.
