Support Autism Initative

KVCR is proud to undertake the five year Autism Initiative. This year as part of the initiative KVCR is working with the community to raise funds and awareness in support of autism education.

Autism is a complex neurobiological disorder that typically lasts throughout a person’s lifetime. It is part of a group of disorders known as autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Today, 1 in 150 individuals is diagnosed with autism, making it more common than pediatric cancer, diabetes, and AIDS combined or Down Syndrome, Mental Retardation, and Cystic Fibrosis combined. It occurs in all racial, ethnic, and social groups and is four times more likely to strike boys than girls. Autism impairs a person’s ability to communicate and relate to others. It is also associated with rigid routines and repetitive behaviors, such as obsessively arranging objects or following very specific routines. Symptoms can range from very mild to quite severe. Autism affects each individual differently and at different levels of severity. It is estimated that around one million people in the US are affected with Autism. It is the most common developmental disability in California.

Some children who receive an early diagnosis, intense behavioral intervention, medical treatment and other interventions may lead typical lives. Not all people diagnosed with autism receive such an early diagnosis or enjoy this possible outcome.

Why Support Autism?

Imagine... Having a 4 year old child who still can't utter the words, "I love you," or a 6 year old child who is not potty-trained... or your child, not invited to birthday parties because he doesn't know how to play?

Now, imagine being the parent of this child and not knowing where to find help or information? Or, having to fight for services to educate this child? Or, finding a physician that can actually offer medical options?

Autism is not rare. Current estimates now suggest that 1 in every 80 boys are diagnosed with this disease. In California, autism diagnoses have increased by 643% in the last ten years.

There is help and hope for these children and their families. The Inland Empire Autism Society of America provides education, information and support to families and professionals faced with autism spectrum disorder.

100% of every dollar raised will help families and professionals in the Inland Empire. To find out more on how to participate - call 909 549 1777.
