San Francisco Police Make Arrest In Bomb Scare

SAN FRANCISCO AP - San Francisco police have arrested a 45-year-old man they say dropped a backpack on a sidewalk near the city's Civic Center and told people that the backpack contained a bomb. Police say after dropping the backpack outside of a florist shop around 10:45 a.m. Tuesday, Garfield Smith told people inside the shop that there was a bomb inside.

When police were called, officers set up a perimeter around the area. Out of what San Francisco police Lt. Troy Dangerfield described as an abundance of caution, the department's bomb squad detonated the backpack around 1:45 p.m. Police determined the backpack did not contain a bomb.

Officers arrested Smith near the scene based on descriptions provide by witnesses. He was being held on suspicion on suspicion of terrorist threats and making a false report of a bomb.
